Scholarship Spotlight: Rob, Cody and Tate Green
Former Freedom Alliance scholarship recipient Rob Green graduated from Augustana College in 2011 with a triple major in English, Journalism and Philosophy. He is a big believer of service work and has had the chance to travel the world through several mission trips. Rob has traveled to places like Guatemala, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and many other countries with Operation Smile, a nonprofit medical service organization that provides cleft lip and palate repair surgeries to children worldwide. Besides working with the patients he also writes human interest stories for the organizations he works with and one of his stories was nominated for Best Story of the year in 2012. Rob also works with Lifeworks International during the summer as a senior leader introducing high school students to service work in under developed countries as well as participating in fundraising activities like circumnavigating the island of Martinique on an inflatable paddleboard to raise money for Tree Aid. Besides all of his community service, he is an avid writer and motorcycle enthusiast. Rob is also a 5th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and was the 2012 American Taekwondo Association (ATA) Regional Instructor of the Year, the 2015 ATA State Champ and earned 1st Place at the Las Vegas Nationals. When at home, Rob and his wife run a very successful martial arts and fitness center with approximately 150 students. He started the Make an Impact Program at the center which encourages his students to create a summer service project of their choice to “make an impact” in the community. The project has grown rapidly in three years and he hopes to be able to offer the program to high school students with a possibility of earning college scholarships.
His brother, Cody, loves outdoors adventures so much that he graduated from Black Hills State University in 2014 with an Outdoor Education and Leadership major. He is an Advanced Wilderness First Responder-Wilderness EMT- and is EMT Certified in Avalanche Rescue and Single Pitch Climbing. After graduation he returned to Sioux Falls for a year to assist with the Parks and Recreation department in Brandon, SD and also works as the Coordinator of Outdoor Activities at Augustana College. His love for the outdoors shows through his motivational and fun leadership style. He hopes to work with the Forestry department in the near future to assist with Sylvan Rock Climbing in the Black Hills area. He also started a custom furniture business recently which is doing very well.
Their sister, Tate, is a freshman at Augustana College and is pursuing a Theater, Music and Art major. She is a very talented young lady and is only the second student in the last 25 years to receive scholarships in all three of the Augustana College Fine Arts departments (art, music and theater). Following her big brother’s footsteps, Tate is also involved in the martial arts program where she is an instructor and has achieved a 3rd Degree Black Belt. Much like her brothers, she hopes to begin her travels through college very soon.
Rob, Cody and Tate are a great example of the many dedicated and talented students Freedom Alliance has helped throughout the years. Their father, MSgt Lee Green served in the Navy and the Air Force for over 20 years and became 100% disabled when he suffered brain nerve damage due to a training accident.
Through our Scholarship Fund, Freedom Alliance has supported hundreds of students like the Green siblings. We are still accepting applications for the 2015-2016 academic year. To learn more or to apply for a scholarship, visit www.fascholarship.com.
