Scholarship Spotlight: Jazmin Unruh

Posted by: faschola - 04/21/16

Jazmin is a sophomore at The Savannah College of Art and Design where she is pursuing a major in writing and a double minor in creative writing and design for sustainability. She has had a lot of success this year publishing articles on elephantjournal.com.

unruh1The art world stole her away from her literary home for a month last September when she had the opportunity to work with Alfredo Martinez, a talented local artist, to design a mural for a brand new store called La Terra Gourmet Oils and Vinegars in Savannah, GA. Martinez is the art director for 13 Bricks Clothing Company, an independent clothing label based out of the historic downtown district of Savannah, where Jazmin is an intern in charge of writing about design for their brand. She had the opportunity to design the tiles that line the bottom of the mural and helped paint the mural itself. She also painted individual tiles for the store’s front desk and made shopping bags from recycled materials.

unruh2Jazmin also helped Martinez paint the first mural at the store where she quickly learned how the process of painting and creating a new colorful piece of art can make a blank wall come to life. The talented student writes, “I love trying new things, because you never know where your talents are until you try it out. I love having paint on my hands just as much as I love a good book. Who would have thought?”

Jazmin’s stepfather is MSG Clements who served 23 years in the Army as Special Forces Operator and is 100% permanently disabled as a result of multiple deployments and combat missions. The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund is a reminder to the sons and daughters of American Heroes that our grateful nation will never forget their service. Jazmin wrote, “This scholarship helps me grow as a student, as an artist and as a person. I could have never imagined going to college, let alone Art school, without the support of Freedom Alliance. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity I’ve been given to make my family proud.”

Through our Scholarship Fund, Freedom Alliance has supported hundreds of students like Jazmin. We are now accepting applications for the 2016-2017 academic year. To learn more or to apply for a scholarship, visit www.fascholarship.com.
